Music: Ensemble Exercises

Notes: A high-school level doublestrokes exercise; it's basically a mix-up of a bunch of double-beat patterns in different contexts for each section. It's not as good as I wanted, but I guess it's alright.

July 2007

Type:

Double-Beat

Duration:

1:15

Recording:

Finale mp3 (732 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

3 Pages: pdf (124 KB)

Notes: Here's a swingy flams exercise that contains several different applications and interpretations of the flam-drag rudiment, as well as a bunch of rhythmic stuff -- not for the metrically challenged.

Finale mp3 (316 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

2 Pages: pdf (104 KB)

Notes: Here's my version of 8-8-16 -- split between the sections. The mp3 is of the accent-tap variation, without the tenor round pattern. The important concept is for the sections to lock into the taps, regardless of any accents. The eighth note remains constant, so, for example, the snares' measure 10 is not played at the same time as the tenors'.

Duration:

Recording:

Finale mp3 (582 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (Unison)

3 Pages: pdf (92 KB)

Notes: I finally worked some licks and groovishness into an exercise in 5/8 time... high five! A lot of 4 against 3 stuff here... This will be my pride and joy until I inevitably learn why it's not as cool as I think it is.

Recording:

Finale mp3 (584 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

4 Pages: pdf (144 KB)

Notes: This short paradiddles exercise is loosely based on the intro to a song from Rush's new album, Snakes and Arrows. It's a great album, and you should buy it.

Finale mp3 (220 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

2 Pages: pdf (84 KB)

Notes: Here's a paradiddles exercise written in 3/4. It repeats the same phrase, adding more diddles each time to the snare and tenor parts. I'm sure it could be modified so that the 4 sixteenth-note bass split at the end of each phrase could be embellished progressively.

Paradiddles

Duration:

0:55 at 92 BPM

Recording:

Finale mp3 (560 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (4 Line)

3 Pages: pdf (116 KB)

Notes: An extended doublestrokes exercise based on sixteenth note triplets. I like it. Some of the parts on the recording sound weird to me... measure 17 is a tenor feature, and Finale made the tenor taps inaudible. I'm not sure if the drum 3 crossovers are possible. If not, those should be normal drum 4 diddles.

Double-Beat

Duration:

About 1:30

Recording:

Finale mp3 (840 KB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

3 Pages: pdf (140 KB)

Notes: A triplet-based double beat, like Kevin Murray's "Triplet Partial." The end is similar to that exercise, but for the written tempo change and "feel" change. It's written to be repeated as necessary.

Type:

Double-Beat

Duration:

About 0:35 without repeating

Recording:

Finale mp3 (656 MB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

2 Pages: pdf (80 KB)

Notes: Here, I've tried to combine the best elements of all the triplet diddles exercises I've had to play. It doesn't really flow or groove, but it should really work those triplet diddles.

Duration:

About 4:00 (with repeat)

Recording:

Finale mp3 (2.4 MB)

Arrangement:

Snare, Tenor, Bass (5 Line)

4 Pages: pdf (132 KB)

Notes: This was the first full exercise I ever wrote. The licks are all very basic, with a stock stick control pattern in the middle. I recently touched it up a bit, but not very much.
